Annual SF Raft Trip
Photos
from last year. The SF Raft trip is
scheduled this year as follows: Operation Paddle or Die 2005
Mission: Infil to AO safely. Prepare base camp and perform base camp operations.
Maneuver the Cheat River Canyon in 6-8 man rafts and have fun. Return to camp
warm up around an SF fire and have fun. Exfil safely to HOR.
Date: 14 May 05 Approximately 1000 hrs
Place: Albright, West Virginia (near Camp Dawson) Equipment. Camping gear, food
and drink, cigars if so inclined.
Special Instructions: Let Jim Diven Jr. know that you will be attending by email
at jmdiven@yahoo.com. Most will want to arrive Friday night and set up camp then
sit around the fire. Let me know when you will arrive.
Camp fees last year were $10 per person. I will get an updated price. Fees for
the raft trip will run somewhere around $75 and includes lunch on the river and
soda/beer for the bus ride back to base camp.
The Cheat River is Class IV-V which in layman's terms means this is serious
whitewater. Just ask those who went last year. The Cheat Canyon is the largest
undammed watershed in the east. It is wild and exciting. It has continuous class
IV-V rapids and drops 300 feet in ten miles. Driving directions will follow at a
later date. Hope to see you there.
Bill's Notes...
The site of the (now) Annual SF Raft Tip in WVA is just north of Camp Dawson. It
was a fantastic time last year and we hope this year will be even better.
Notes: Spouses and girl friends are greatly welcomed (we'd recommend you not
bring both, though). Most of us choose to camp out at a nearby camp ground.
Needless to say, participants will get wet during the raft trip itself. Bring
appropriate clothing for the raft trip and dry clothes for later. Last year the
weather and temp were perfect. I don't think anyone got cold at all on the river
last year. Things might be different this year so plan accordingly. The rafting
outfitter provides life-jackets, helmets and scuba booties. Wet suit rentals are
available at extra cost. Bring a towel with which to dry off.
Recommendations for your planning: Travel to the camp ground on Friday
afternoon/evening (or stay at a hotel in Kingwood or up on I-68). You'll have
more fun if you camp out. The camp ground has indoor showers. We assemble at the
campground early Sat AM, do the rafting trip and return to the camp site to fix
group dinner. (The less adventuresome wives/girlfriends will stay at camp and
avoid the hazards of the river this year) On Sat evening we all gather around
the camp fire and enjoy the feast, drink a beer or two (or your favorite
beverage) and continue the onslaught of lies of the rafting trip and previous
military adventures. Bring some yard chairs. On Sunday we get up and break camp.
Some of us have breakfast at the restaurant on I-68 and before traveling home.
If you can make this, you'll have a great time. It was a ton of fun last year.
RSVP To Jim directly at jmdiven@yahoo.com. Please contact him very soon so he
lock in your reservations for the rafting trip.
Negative RSVPs are NOT requested or desired. Contact him ONLY if you are
attending or need details.
Please pass this on to anyone you think may be interested.
